Van Dalen’s Cave & Peak Hike

Distance: 14 km
Time: Hike 5h - 6h

Starting and ending at the Garden Route Botanical Garden in George, the Van Dalen’s Peak hike offers a memorable outdoor adventure. The trail climbs steadily through the lush Tonnelbos forest before reaching the ridge path that leads up to Van Dalen’s Peak at 945 meters, about two-thirds of the way to the towering George Peak above. The ridge section can be overgrown with dense Outeniqua vegetation, making the last 60 meters challenging.

Once on the ridge, hikers will often feel the strong north berg wind, so layering up is wise. The descent is steeper and can be slippery, leading back down to the forest contour path and eventually returning to the Botanical Garden. It’s a rewarding hike with a mix of forest, ridge views, and a good physical challenge for outdoor lovers.
